Catering to the country’s food security needs since 1960s, Punjab is caught in the wheat-paddy cycle thereby not only resulting in ecological crises but also farmers’ over dependence on the minimum support price. Professor Nirvikar Singh, who teaches economics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, tells TOI’s Sanjeev Verma that the wheat-rice cropping pattern will result in disaster for the entire economy.
