'Provision for Saunders’ fund violative of statute’
The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued notice to Haryana government on a plea seeking amendment in the Punjab police rules (applicable to Haryana) on a welfare fund in the name of British police officer J P Saunders and head constable Chanan Singh, whom Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries had shot dead. Both were killed in Lahore to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai. The then police authorities had set up the welfare fund to honour the British officer and the head constable.
