Why UP anti-conversion law is India’s strictest
The Uttar Pradesh assembly passed the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion (Amendment) Bill, 2024, enhancing penalties for unlawful conversions. The law now imposes up to 14 years in prison for those linked to illegal agencies and 20 years to life for conversions of minor girls or SC/ST women. Crimes are non-bailable and only sessions courts can hear these cases.
